Tutor Students on Wyzant

Verified on Sep 11, 2026

You tutor one student at a time in a subject you know. Lessons happen by video or in person, through Wyzant. Wyzant's December 2024 blog says tutors charge $35-60 an hour on average. Wyzant keeps 25%, so your cut runs $26.25-45 an hour. You must be 18 and live in the US. Pass a subject quiz, or send your qualifications.

What you do

You tutor one student at a time. You teach a subject you already know well, like algebra, chemistry, or essay writing.

Wyzant is the website that connects you with students. You pick your subjects and set your own price.

Lessons happen two ways. You can meet a student in person, or teach over video using Wyzant’s own online tool.

Wyzant’s tutor agreement says you are not its employee, and not its contractor either.

What it pays

Wyzant publishes the average rate tutors charge. We found no Wyzant page that states a typical tutor’s take-home pay.

In a blog post from December 2024, Wyzant said tutors charge $35 to $60 an hour on average.

You keep 75% of whatever rate you charge. Wyzant keeps the other 25% as a Platform Fee. If your rate is $35 an hour, your cut is $26.25. If it is $60, your cut is $45.

You set your own hourly rate. You can raise or lower it any time.

One catch. If you raise your rate, some students keep your old rate. Anyone who talked to you in the last three months keeps it, unless they agree to pay more.

Wyzant’s own tutor page makes a bigger claim. It says top tutors have earned $50,000 or more in a year. That is a marketing example about its best-paid tutors. We found no Wyzant page that says what a typical tutor earns.

The government also tracks pay for tutors. In May 2025, tutors who work as employees earned an average, or mean, of $23.10 an hour. That is employees’ pay, not what a Wyzant tutor keeps. Wyzant keeps 25% of your rate.

Travel time and lesson prep are not paid on their own. Wyzant tells tutors to build both into the hourly rate.

Wyzant pays by direct deposit twice a month, on the 1st and the 15th. You must submit a lesson within 14 days of teaching it. Miss that window, and it cannot be paid.

If a current student refers a new one, the rules change. You keep 100% of your rate for lessons with that student. No Platform Fee is taken from a referral.

Wyzant sends you a tax form called a 1099 once you earn enough in a year. It does not hold back any tax for you. The IRS says anyone with net self-employment earnings of $400 or more must file a tax return. A tax professional can tell you if that applies to you and what you owe.

Who this fits

This fits you if you know a subject well. You could be a retired teacher, a college student, or good at algebra or essay writing.

It fits if you want to set your own price.

It fits if a background check does not worry you. Wyzant does not require one to register. But a student or a parent can ask for one later.

It fits if you have a laptop or desktop computer. The Wyzant application can only be finished on the website, not the app. Its online tool also needs a working camera and microphone if you teach by video.

Who should skip this

Skip this if you do not live in the United States. Wyzant requires you to live here and be eligible to work here.

Skip it if you need cash the same week. Pay goes out twice a month, on the 1st and the 15th. A lesson only counts if you submit it within 14 days.

Skip it if you dislike competing for work. When a student posts a job, only five tutors can apply before it closes.

Skip it if you expect Wyzant to supply books or a whiteboard. It does not. It will also not pay you back for anything you buy.

Skip it if one failed quiz would stop you. Each subject quiz allows one try.

  3. Choose your subjects, and write a Free Response about your experience.
  4. Set your hourly rate. Build travel and prep time into it.
  5. Agree to the Independent Tutor Agreement, and verify your email.
  6. Wait for review. Wyzant answers in 3 to 10 business days.
  7. Pass the quiz for each subject, or send written qualifications instead. You can only list a subject once you pass or are approved.

Before you pay anyone: Applying and listing on Wyzant is free. Nobody should ask you to pay to sign up.

Your first week

Day 1. List the subjects you can prove. Gather what you would put in a Free Response.

Day 2. Sign up. Choose your subjects, write your Free Response, and set a rate that already builds in travel and prep time.

Day 3. Take the subject quizzes. You get one try for each.

Day 4. Set up your camera and mic. Check that Chrome or Firefox works, in case you teach online.

Day 5. Plan what your first lesson will cover.

Day 6. Check your email for approval. Review can take up to 10 business days.

Day 7. If you are approved, browse the student job board. Jobs close after five tutors apply. A first paid lesson may not come this week.

Tools and things you might need

To teach online, you need a device with a working camera and a microphone. It must run Chrome or Firefox.

If you teach math or science, a drawing tablet lets you write out steps the way you would on paper.

  • Laptop or desktop computer Wyzant's sign-up only works on a laptop or desktop computer.
  • USB headset with a microphone Clear sound helps a student hear you during an online lesson. You can start without it.
  • Webcam Wyzant's online tool needs a working camera to get certified. You can start without it.
  • Graphics drawing tablet A tablet lets you write out math steps on screen for students. You can start without it.

The downsides

Wyzant keeps 25% of your rate for every lesson.

Each student job closes after five tutors apply. You are competing every time.

A lesson must be submitted within 14 days of teaching it. Miss that window, and it is not paid.

Travel time and lesson prep are not paid on their own. Wyzant expects you to build both into your rate. It will not pay you back for gas, printing, or anything else you spend.

Wyzant does not supply books, a whiteboard, or any other materials. You bring your own.

Each subject quiz gives you one attempt. Study before you start it.

If you raise your rate, a recent student keeps your old, lower rate. Recent means contacted in the last three months.

No tax is held back from your pay. You are responsible for setting money aside yourself.

Questions people ask

Do I need a background check? Not to register. But a student, a parent, or you can order one for $15.99. If one is requested, you must agree to it within 7 days or you could lose your account.

Is $35-60 an hour what I will earn? No. That is the average rate tutors charge on Wyzant, not your take-home pay. You keep 75% of your own rate, so a $35 to $60 rate means you keep $26.25 to $45.

Do I need a teaching certificate? We found no teaching license in Wyzant’s tutor requirements. It asks you to pass a subject quiz, or send your written qualifications instead.

Am I a Wyzant employee? Wyzant’s tutor agreement says you are not its employee, and not its contractor either.

Can I charge a cancellation fee? Yes, within reason. Wyzant treats a fee higher than the lesson’s own cost as unreasonable.

What we could not confirm

  • Wyzant says its top tutors have earned $50,000 or more a year. That is a top-earner example. It is not what a typical tutor makes.
  • We did not find if Wyzant accepts new tutors in every subject or area.
  • We did not find how long a bank takes to post the deposit. That depends on your bank.
