DoorDash tells Dashers how their pay is built. It prints a few dollar amounts. On the pages we read, it does not print a national total for what a Dasher earns. A Dasher is a person who delivers orders for DoorDash.
We read DoorDash’s own Dasher pages on October 28, 2026. We did not use review sites or forums. This post covers what those pages say, and what they leave out.
How DoorDash builds pay
DoorDash says Dasher pay has three parts: base pay, promotions and tips. Base pay is the set amount for one delivery. A promotion is an extra bonus DoorDash adds to some orders. A tip is money the customer adds.
For base pay, DoorDash says it rests on the estimated time, distance and desirability of the offer. An offer is the order the app shows you before you accept.
DoorDash’s help center gives one range. In Earn per Offer mode, it says base pay ranges from $2-10+.
On tips, DoorDash says 100% of tips received by DoorDash go to the Dasher.
DoorDash’s help center also says the offer amount Dashers see on the acceptance screen will be the minimum.
The two ways to earn
DoorDash has two modes. The first is Earn per Offer. The $2-10+ base pay range is for that mode. Read each offer before you accept it.
The second is Earn by Time. DoorDash says it pays a minimum guaranteed active hourly rate while on a delivery. Active time means the time you are on a delivery. We did not find that rate on the page we read.
DoorDash also says access to Earn by Time mode is not guaranteed. It says the mode is subject to availability in select cities. So you may not see this mode at all.
City pay floors
A pay floor is a minimum set by a rule. Two cities and one state are named in DoorDash’s help center.
New York City. DoorDash lists minimum guaranteed earnings of $22.13 per active hour. DoorDash says that if its pay is below the minimum, it will add a pay adjustment the following Monday morning.
Seattle. DoorDash gives a 2026 formula: engaged miles x $0.80 plus engaged minutes x $0.47. DoorDash says Seattle Dashers earn the greater of the formula or $5.34 per offer. It adds “Except in specific circumstances outlined by the law”. Check DoorDash’s Seattle page for how it defines “engaged.”
California. DoorDash’s help center says there are guaranteed minimum earnings on all deliveries with a pickup location in California. The sentence we read prints no rate.
DoorDash’s newsroom has also made claims about California. A May 2024 post says “Dashers in California are earning more than ever”. It gives averages per hour while on deliveries in 2023. A January 2022 post covers Dashers across California. It gives averages per hour while on deliveries, for 2021. We do not print those amounts here. They describe one state in past years.

What DoorDash does not publish
On the pages we read, DoorDash prints no national figure for what a Dasher earns per hour or per week. We found no such number. Its pay page says weekly earnings depend on how many hours you dash. Its FAQ says what a Dasher earns depends on where, when and how often they deliver. Its FAQ asks how much you can make delivering through DoorDash. The answer is: “It depends on your market, your schedule, and how you select offers”.
That does not prove no figure exists anywhere. We read the Dasher home page, the pay page and the FAQ. We read the requirements page and two Dasher blog posts. We read the help center pay article and the news pages. We did not read older pages of the newsroom archive or the Dasher app.
So plan with care. The pages point you to your market, your hours and the offers you choose. Our post on what gig platforms publish about pay shows how other platforms compare.
How and when you get paid
DoorDash says you automatically get paid weekly by direct deposit to your bank account. The page names a bank account. It does not say what happens without one.
You can get paid sooner. DoorDash says you can select Fast Pay to get earnings once per day. The fee is $1.99. DoorDash also says that with DoorDash Crimson, you can get instant no-fee deposits automatically after every dash. Crimson is a DoorDash account type. We did not read the full terms for it.
What you need to start
- Age: DoorDash says at least 18 years old in most states. It says California requires 21 years old, for new applicants only. Check how old you have to be for each side gig.
- Vehicle: DoorDash accepts any car, scooter or bike, with bike in select cities.
- License: DoorDash says that when delivering by car, motorcycle or scooter, you need a valid driver’s license.
- Bike: DoorDash says that when delivering by bicycle or e-bike, you do NOT need a driver’s license.
- Background check: DoorDash’s FAQ lists a motor vehicle record check for vehicle Dashers. A motor vehicle record is your driving history. See which side gigs run a background check.
Taxes: what DoorDash says
A 1099-NEC is a tax form. It reports money paid to someone who is not an employee. DoorDash says Dashers who earned $600 or more between January 1 and December 31 get one. It says you get the 1099-NEC form via the Dasher app.
DoorDash also says it does not automatically withhold taxes. Withholding means taking tax out of each paycheck. Here, nothing is taken out for you. This post is information, not tax advice. A tax professional can tell you what applies to you. For more, read who takes the tax out of your side gig pay.
The downsides
- No guaranteed weekly pay. DoorDash’s pages say weekly earnings depend on how many hours you dash. Where you are, when you work and how often also matter.
- Offers vary. In Earn per Offer mode, base pay ranges from $2-10+.
- Earn by Time may not exist where you live. DoorDash says access is not guaranteed and is subject to availability in select cities.
- Your car costs are yours. Gas, repairs and upkeep add up. We did not look for a figure for them. By car, motorcycle or scooter, you need a valid driver’s license.
- Insurance may stop when you do. DoorDash says DoorDash maintained insurance only covers you when actively dashing. An insurer can tell you how your own policy treats delivery work.
- Tax is not withheld. DoorDash does not automatically withhold taxes. Set money aside yourself. Read gross is not take-home.
- Cashing out early costs money. Fast Pay costs $1.99.
